EMI Celebrates 2005 MTV Video Music Awards

Once again EMI Music Publishing reaped a host of awards at the MTV Video Music Awards. The 2005 celebration took place August 28th in Miami, Florida. As always, representing R&B, Rock, and Pop, EMI's songwriters participated in 8 of the 21 total awards.
Kanye West, whose sophomore album was just released in the US, took home the Best Male Video award for his hit Jesus Walks. West is back on cd shelves this week with the release of his second album Late Registration (Roc-A Fella/IDJ). Kanye performed his new first single Gold Digger at the ceremony, which features actor Jaime Foxx impersonating Ray Charles. The song is currently #3 on the Rap chart, #4 on Hot R&B, #6 at R&B, and #10 at Ringtones. West, whose new album has received 1.7 million pre-orders, will be heading to Europe for a promotional tour September 15th.
Ever-present diva Alicia Keys, took home the Best R&B award for her Karma single. Keys recently confirmed she will be making her acting debut as the role of an assassin in the upcoming film Smokin' Aces. Keys can also be seen on a new episode of MTV's Unplugged next month. EMI's Juan Atkins co-wrote Missy Elliot's smash Lose Control, which was honored with both Best Hip Hop Video and Best Dance Video. Best Rap Video went to Ludacris for his Number One Spot, which was co-written and produced by EMI's Green Lantern, and Best Choreography In A Video went to Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl, a song credited to EMI's Pharrell Williams.
Recently signed American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson walked away with two awards this year for the single Since You Been Gone - Best Female Video and Best Pop Video. Clarkson performed the smash hit, which has been on the Billboard Singles chart for 38 weeks, as the evening's closer. Her new single Because Of You comes out shortly; she will be shooting its video next week with film director Vadim Perelman.
Gorillaz picked up two VMA's for their recent single Feel Good Inc. The Parlophone band (Virgin in the US) picked up Breakthrough Video and Best Special Effects in A Video awards for the cartoon clip which was co-directed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett.
