The Blue Van
The Blue Van is a blues-rock band from Denmark consisting of Steffen Westmark (vocals and guitar), Søren Christensen (keyboard and vocals), Allan Villadsen (bass), and Per Jørgenson (drums and vocals).
In October The Blue Van released their 3rd full length album, which has been 2 years in the making. After the band ended their European tour as main support for Aussie rockers JET in April 2007, they went back to Denmark to work on the 3rd album. Pre-production took place in the band's rehearsal space based in Copenhagen, but also at an old abandoned farm in northern jutland owned by family members. These sessions resulted in more than 20 songs, where 18 were chosen and recorded.
Silly Boy is the first single from forthcoming album, Man Up. Silly Boy was chosen because the band felt that the composition and the lyrics gave the best picture of a more mature band. Transistions have become one of the main themes of the record - going from A to B, from boy to man, etc...So it's not a coincidence that the first single is called Silly Boy and the album Man Up.
The first thing written for Silly Boy was the chorus. The 4 lines, Silly Boys//You Ran Away//You're Unemployed//Waste Away, came out of nowhere one late night, as singer and guitar player, Steffen Westmark, was trying out a new riff, he'd just composed. After that the song fell into place piece by piece. The final corrections were done with the rest of the band during the pre-production sessions. In the spirit of how the chorus evolved like a stream of conciousness this method was used to complete the rest of the lyric - which gives the song a very honest feel to it.
The lyric is a reflection over one's path in life. Did you make the right decisions? What makes you unique? But also about feeling alienated from everyone else, and not wanting to be labeled by society. The chorus is among other things society's answer to anyone who dares to stand on their own two feet.
Silly Boy is a good example of The Blue Van's new and more experimenting way to approach both song-writing and production. The whole drumkit has been deadened down with the sheets the band slept on at the studio, and the guitars go directly in to the recording console to obtain the ultimate dry fuzzy sound. The end result is a modern power-pop tune, that may throw a few respectful nods to the giants of the past, but most of all is something new and exciting that the world hasn't heard before.
The song is among the first handful of songs recorded in Popshit Studios in Denmark. The song is produced by the band and Mark Wills, who also worke3d on the debut album The Art of Rolling, and Dan Hougesen.
