EMI Music Publishing Signs Global Deal With Rebecca Ferguson
Singer Songwriter Rebecca Ferguson
London - EMI Music Publishing, the world’s leading publisher of popular music, has today announced that it has inked a global publishing agreement with acclaimed singer songwriter and 2010 X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson.
The new deal sees EMI Music Publishing represent Ferguson’s current material, including her co-written debut album ‘Heaven’. The album entered the UK chart at number three in December 2011 and has now been certified platinum with sales in excess of 400,000 following impressive first week sales of 128,000.
The album has been critically acclaimed by fans and media alike. Giving the album five stars, Daily Telegraph rock critic Neil McCormick said: “There’s nothing about this record I don’t like,” calling the album: "A gritty collection of soulful, self-penned songs about real emotional issues." According to Laurence Green at The Observer, “Heaven is a tantalising glimpse at just how brilliantly amazing Rebecca can be,” while the Daily Mail writes: “Heaven is an album that could touch millions."
Rebecca Ferguson said: “I'm so excited to be working with EMI Music Publishing, they have such a great history and so many fantastic songwriters have signed with them. I'm looking forward to a successful and creative relationship.”
EMI Music Publishing’s President, UK and European A&R Guy Moot commented: "We are thrilled to have signed Rebecca. Her career is off to a flying start and her talent as a songwriter is undeniable. The whole team have been deeply impressed by Rebecca’s natural songwriting ability from the start. She writes honestly and from the heart, and that allows her to connect with people. We’re now looking forward to creating opportunities for her music to be heard on a worldwide stage.”
Throughout the course of the X Factor series, Ferguson showcased her distinctive vocal style winning scores of fans each with her timeless, soulful performances that are echoed on ‘Heaven’. The first single ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ peaked at number 10 in the UK singles chart and was featured in a nationwide television advertising campaign for Nescafé coffee in the UK. ‘Heaven’ is due for release in the United States in May 2012 and Ferguson will be touring Britain throughout February and March 2012.
Here’s what the press had to say about ‘Heaven’:
The Daily Telegraph, Neil McCormick - 5 stars
“Ferguson actually sounds as if she belongs in the real world, with real people and real emotions, making music that reaches back…Ferguson sings with an understated restraint so filled with emotion it sounds as if she’s about to burst… the songs themselves clearly carry a weight of meaning for her… there is nothing about this record I don’t like…reality TV has finally turned out someone who not only has the hallmarks of a real star, but is also an artist in her own right.”
The Independent, Andy Gill - 4 out of 5 stars
“There's a hard central core of reality, of real lived experience, running through these ten songs that's almost diametrically opposed to the usual soul-diva clichés… Ferguson manages to bring a fresh eye [to her songs], simply by being unflinchingly honest."
Daily Mail, Adrian Thrills - 4 out of 5 stars
“Heaven is an album that could touch millions."
MusicOMH, Laurence Green - 4 out of 5 stars
“On the X Factor, it was clear that Rebecca was the talent; week after week she blew the audience away with inspired, powerful cover versions. And if there’s one overriding theme to Heaven, it’s that it stands as a genuine statement of that talent…Heaven is a tantalising glimpse at just how brilliantly amazing Rebecca can be…”
