EMI Music Publishing Announces Joint Venture with Plan B to Create New Publishing Company

London – EMI Music Publishing, the world’s leading publisher of popular music, has signed a joint venture agreement with Ivor Novello award winning songwriter Plan B to launch a new publishing company called Temperamental Music to discover the cream of writing talent from Britain and beyond, it was announced today.

The agreement will see Plan B – aka Ben Drew – leading the company from a creative standpoint, signing and developing songwriters, and working to develop new opportunities for them around the world. EMI Music Publishing will partner with Temperamental Music to handle key services including all aspects of synch and licensing and administration on a global basis.

Ben Drew said: “I’ve always wanted to be in control of my destiny and build my own empire and this is one step closer to that. I feel I can help young musicians progress and plant some positive seeds in their heads. Before I made it I was trying to help other people, the only difference is now I’ve got a budget.”

EMI Music Publishing’s President, UK and European A&R Guy Moot said:  “You have to have a huge amount of respect for all that Ben has achieved not just as an artist but as a writer in the last five years. He knows what it takes to become a successful writer, and he recognises real talent when he sees it. He will bring the same strong creative vision to his publishing company that he brings to everything else he does, and we at EMI Music Publishing are looking forward to building this new long-term relationship with him to maximise the opportunity for the writers he signs to have their music heard on a global platform”.

Daniel Lloyd Jones, Vice President A & R, EMI Music Publishing. added: “Ben’s drive is second to none, he prides himself on excelling in everything does - his music, acting and directing – he is infectious and it’s a privilege to be around his creative talents. The focus of this partnership deal is to channel his vision and creativity and support him in totality. Everyone at EMI is proud to work with him and Sam and Roy at Urok Management, and look forward to developing some exciting young talent.”

A multi-talented songwriter, Plan B burst on the UK urban music scene with his 2006 critically acclaimed hip hop/grime record ‘Who Needs Action When You Got Words’, a debut that showcased his bleakly witty lyrical talent.  His second studio album ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’, which went to number one on the UK album chart and is certified platinum,  marked a significant change in genre, embracing a more soulful sound which allowed his vocal ability to shine through.  The number one album has sold over a million copies to date and was named the fifth best selling album of 2011.

Plan B has received numerous industry accolades, most recently he was honoured with ASCAP’S Vanguard Award which adds to an already impressive haul of, amongst others,  three Ivor Novello Awards , including the coveted Songwriter of the Year Award and the Album Award for ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’, as well as a Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist .
